Nghe An leaders rally support for flood-stricken western communes
Top provincial leaders have launched a major fundraising campaign to aid residents in the western communes of Nghe An province, who are grappling with the aftermath of historic flooding caused by Typhoon Wipha, the third tropical storm of the season.

The donation launch event, held on the morning of July 26, was attended by Mr. Nguyen Duc Trung, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee; Mr. Hoang Nghia Hieu, Permanent Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the Provincial People's Council; and Mr. Le Hong Vinh, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee. Also present were representatives from central Party committees, members of the Provincial Party's Executive Committee, and other key provincial officials.
The impact of Typhoon Wipha and its subsequent rainfall has resulted in the most severe flooding in Nghe An's history, causing extensive damage to life, property, and livelihoods across the province.
According to the Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, Search and Rescue, as of 6:00 PM on July 25, 2025, a total of 15 communes were either fully or partially isolated, affecting 132 villages, 11,817 households, and 58,618 people.
Among these, three communes—Huu Kiem, Nhon Mai, and Muong Tip—were completely cut off, stranding 4,958 households and 23,674 residents in 56 villages.
An additional 12 communes were partially isolated.
The authorities confirmed four fatalities, one person missing, and four others injured. As of July 26, rescue and relief efforts are still underway as three communes and hundreds of villages remain inaccessible due to floodwaters.
The damage to infrastructure and property is staggering. 304 homes were completely destroyed or washed away. Another 4,818 houses suffered significant damage, with assets and belongings lost to the floodwaters.
24 schools and 6 medical centers were inundated and damaged.
The flood destroyed nearly 3,540 hectares of rice, over 3,000 hectares of other crops, and nearly 7,400 hectares of perennial and annual plants. Over 1,000 livestock and nearly 40,000 poultry were killed, while more than 540 hectares of aquaculture ponds and 239 fish cages were ruined.
The road network is severely crippled, with 99 major landslides on national and provincial highways, 25 bridges and culverts destroyed, and nearly 400 other road blockages and impassable points.
The disaster also damaged 2,020 meters of irrigation canals, thousands of meters of clean water pipes, and brought down hundreds of electricity poles, disrupting power and water supplies to many communities.
Life for residents in the disaster-hit areas is extremely difficult. In response, provincial authorities and functional forces are working tirelessly to overcome the consequences of the flood. Efforts are focused on clearing roads, restoring communication lines, and providing essential supplies such as food, drinking water, and medicine to the affected populations.

Embracing the Vietnamese tradition of "tương thân, tương ái" (mutual love and support) and "lá lành đùm lá rách" (the good leaves protect the torn ones), provincial leaders and officials led the charge in donating to the cause.
The appeal has resonated strongly. Within just over two days, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Nghe An has received over VND 38.5 billion in pledges and donations from local authorities, businesses, organizations, and individuals both within and outside the province, all directed towards supporting the people of western Nghe An.
