Nghe An marks the 10th anniversary of Vi, Giam folk singing being recognized by UNESCO

On the evening of November 23, at Ho Chi Minh Square (Vinh City), Nghe An Province solemnly organized the ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of Vi, Giam folk singing of Nghe - Tinh being recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

On November 27, 2014, Vi, Giam folk singing of Nghe - Tinh was officially recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This milestone holds significant importance in preserving and promoting the value of Vi, Giam folk singing, enhancing the awareness of local and international communities about this unique cultural heritage.

In his speech at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of Nghe An Provincial People’s Committee, Mr. Bui Dinh Long, emphasized that in the decade since Vi Giam’s UNESCO recognition, the authorities and people of Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces have joined hands to ensure that this heritage continues to spread nationally and internationally.

While celebrating the achievements, Vice Chairman Bui Dinh Long acknowledged certain goals that remain unfulfilled. He stressed that for Vi Giam folk singing to truly live up to its status as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the authorities and people of Nghe An and Ha Tinh must continue implementing programs to protect and promote its values.

“In this journey, Nghe An Province hopes to continue receiving support and collaboration from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, central agencies, and other stakeholders”, he said.

Vice Chairman Bui Dinh Long also emphasized the shared commitment and pride of the authorities and people of both provinces in promoting the heritage of their homeland, ensuring that Vi Giam folk singing resonates and integrates with other cultural treasures of the nation.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Mr. Ta Quang Dong, highlighted the importance of ensuring the enduring appeal and sustainability of Vi Giam folk singing.

He urged Nghe An Province to proactively and effectively collaborate with Ha Tinh Province, central agencies, relevant organizations, communities, and the public nationwide to implement the national action program to safeguard and promote this intangible cultural heritage.

This includes intensifying communication and educational activities to enhance awareness and responsibility across the political system and society, especially among the younger generation, for the preservation and promotion of Vi Giam folk singing.

Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong also called for efforts to promote the cultural value of Vi Giam within Vietnam and internationally, ensuring its broader reach and integration into global culture. Additionally, he proposed developing Vi Giam into a unique cultural tourism product for the Nghe land.

On this occasion, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism presented Certificates of Merit to five organizations and five individuals for their outstanding contributions to the preservation and promotion of Vi Giam folk singing during the 2014–2024 period.

The Chairman of Nghe An Provincial People’s Committee also awarded Certificates of Merit to 10 organizations and 10 individuals from Nghe An for their excellent contributions to the conservation and promotion of this heritage in the same period.

During the ceremony, delegates, residents, and visitors enjoyed the artistic program "Vi Giam – The Soul of the Homeland Shines Bright".

The program featured performances by artists from the Nghe An Traditional Art Center, Ha Tinh Dance Arts Center, Bac Ninh Art Troupe, Bac Lieu Art Troupe, and Dak Lak Artisan Ensemble.
