Ve Vung Dam – The emerald gem of Yen Thanh’s rice land
Nestled in the fertile plains of Yen Thanh District, Nghe An Province, Ve Vung Dam emerges as a captivating emerald gem. Not only is it a key irrigation work of strategic importance, but it is also gradually becoming a popular destination on the eco-tourism map of Nghe An.

Following National Highway 48E, about 7km westward from Hoa Thanh Town, travelers will reach Hung Tran Slope, where vast chestnut forests spanning over 120 hectares stretch out on the right-hand side. From this point, a vast lake appears—Ve Vung Dam—whose tranquil surface reflects the surrounding chestnut trees, creating a unique and refreshing natural beauty. During the chestnut harvest season, visitors can enjoy the rustic yet fascinating experience of gathering chestnuts.

Located in Dong Thanh Commune, Ve Vung Dam covers a water surface area of up to 720 hectares and holds a storage capacity of nearly 20 million cubic meters. Built in the 1980s, it plays a vital role in irrigating thousands of hectares of rice fields and crops across the region. Yet, what sets it apart is its crystal-clear lake water and the surrounding mountain ranges, forming a rare and poetic landscape in the heart of the delta region of Nghe An.

From a bird’s eye view, the vast lake resembles a giant mirror reflecting the endless skies and lush forests. Scattered across the lake are clusters of small isles, evoking the image of a miniature Ha Long Bay. These isles, with names like Nay, Bach Dan, Ranh Ranh, Dong Mit, Anh Duc, Hon Bien, and Len Dinh, rise gently from the water, adding charm and serenity to the landscape. During the dry season, receding water levels reveal three temporary isles—ideal spots for camping and outdoor excursions.

Surrounding Ve Vung Dam are large and small hills and majestic mountains, creating a peaceful and poetic backdrop. The lake is bordered by whispering chestnut and eucalyptus forests, winding hills, and nearly ten large and small islets, forming a distinctive and appealing natural ensemble.
This area also serves as a sanctuary for numerous bird species, including thousands of white storks that gather at dusk, creating a tranquil yet vivid natural spectacle. Such breathtaking scenes leave a lasting impression on all who visit.

Ve Vung Dam is not only a destination for nature enthusiasts but also offers visitors a chance to enjoy the simple, authentic charm of rural life. Small fishing boats glide across the calm lake, clusters of wild grass sway in the gentle breeze, and birds sing joyfully—nature’s purest melodies inviting exploration.

Mr. Phan Trong Luong, a long-time protector of local bird populations and caretaker of 120 hectares of chestnut trees and over 40 hectares of acacia forest around the lake, shares that the reservoir is home to a rich variety of aquatic species, including fish, shrimp, and snails.

As such, visitors are treated to rustic delicacies such as steamed mud carp, braised grass carp with bamboo shoots, and softshell turtle stew with green banana and tofu. The renowned “Ve Vung grass carp” is especially prized for its firm and flavorful meat. Hospitable local residents are always ready to welcome guests with a cup of green tea and stories about the dam and the chestnut forest that has been nurtured and preserved for decades.

From Vinh City, visitors can take National Highway 7A, turn toward the center of Yen Thanh District, and continue approximately 7km westward to reach the dam. This scenic route also connects conveniently to other attractions such as Gam Pagoda and Duc Hoang Temple. A concrete road now runs along the lakeshore, making it accessible for both motorcycles and small cars. Several restaurants have also been established in the area in recent years to serve local cuisine to visitors.
With its significant potential in terms of natural scenery, ecology, and cultural experiences, Ve Vung Dam deserves comprehensive investment to become a highlight of eco-tourism in Yen Thanh District in particular and Nghe An Province as a whole.
