Vinh City participates in the 6th International Conference on Learning Cities in Saudi Arabia’s Jubail
The 6th International Conference on Learning Cities takes place from December 2 to December 5 in Jubail, Saudi Arabia. This event is co-hosted by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) and the industrial city of Jubail, a member of UNESCO's Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC).
The conference brings together nearly 1,200 delegates from over 300 learning cities across 79 countries within UNESCO's Global Network of Learning Cities, along with policymakers, experts, and relevant organizations.
Vietnam’s delegation to this conference includes representatives from three of its five cities that are members of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities: Sa Dec City (Dong Thap Province), Son La City (Son La Province), and Vinh City (Nghe An Province).
With the theme "Learning cities at the forefront of climate action”, the conference takes place amidst the climate change crisis, currently at a red alert level for humanity and the planet.
Communities worldwide are grappling with its devastating impacts, including the erosion of animal and plant ecosystems, deadly heatwaves, irregular rainfall patterns, droughts, and floods.
These and other challenges caused by climate change demand sustainable solutions, particularly as they affect urban communities’ services, infrastructure, and livelihoods.
The conference aims to raise awareness of the potential of learning cities in pioneering actions to address climate change.
It also provides an opportunity for members and other stakeholders to convene, strengthen relationships, and share experiences in developing learning cities.
Through the conference, participating cities can exchange knowledge on climate action and showcase projects aimed at improving community resilience to current and future environmental crises.
During the conference, five plenary sessions, two mayoral forums, and 14 parallel sessions were held. The Vinh City delegation, comprising three members and led by Ms. Tran Thi Cam Tu, Vice Chairwoman of the Vinh City People’s Committee, delivered a speech at Parallel Session No. 7 on the theme: "Bridging the digital divide for older adults in learning cities”.
The speech highlighted an overview of Vinh City, its achievements in recent years, challenges in bridging the digital divide for older adults, and solutions to address this issue.
The speech during Parallel Session No. 7 was acknowledged and highly appreciated by the session’s chairperson, who commended Vinh City’s efforts to close the digital gap for older adults.
Previously, on September 21, 2020, UNESCO awarded Vinh City a certificate of recognition as a member of the "Global Network of Learning Cities". This recognition is a source of pride and honor for Vinh City as it strives to become a regional hub for education and training in North Central Vietnam.
